Gambling Winnings Tax NZ [October 2026]: IRD Rules

The short version: recreational gambling winnings are not taxed in New Zealand. Here's the full picture, including the two situations where tax can apply — professional gambling and crypto disposal.

Quick answer: Recreational gambling winnings are not taxable in New Zealand. Inland Revenue only taxes gambling when it's carried on as a business (professional gambling). Separately, because crypto is treated as property, a gain when you later dispose of cryptocurrency you won can be taxable.

Recreational winnings: tax-free

If you play for fun — pokies, table games, sports bets — your winnings are not income under New Zealand tax law, and you don't declare them to IRD. This is because the result of gambling is considered a windfall, not income earned from a taxable activity. It applies whether you win NZ$50 or NZ$50,000 on a hobby basis.

The professional-gambler exception

The one case where winnings can be taxed is when gambling amounts to a business — someone who gambles systematically, with skill and organisation, as their livelihood. This is a high and fact-specific bar; a hobby player on a hot streak is not a professional. Very few New Zealanders meet it.

Crypto gambling: the property wrinkle

Crypto adds a layer. Inland Revenue treats cryptocurrency as property, not currency. The gambling win itself isn't taxed, but if you later sell or convert the crypto you won and it has risen in value, that disposal gain can be taxable.

Worked example: you win 0.01 BTC when one BTC is worth NZ$100,000 (so the holding is worth NZ$1,000). Three months later you convert it to NZD when BTC has risen, and it's now worth NZ$1,300. The NZ$300 gain on disposal is the part Inland Revenue may treat as taxable — not the original win. Keep a record of the NZD value both when you receive crypto and when you dispose of it.

What about GST and operator duties?

Taxes and duties that apply to operators (and, from 2026, licensed online casinos) are a separate matter and don't fall on you as a player. Don't confuse operator duty with player tax — many gambling sites blur the two.

This is general information, not tax advice. For meaningful sums or anything unusual, consult a New Zealand accountant or IRD directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I pay tax on gambling winnings in New Zealand?
No. Recreational gambling winnings are not taxable income in New Zealand. Inland Revenue does not tax the money you win from casino games, pokies or betting as a hobby player.
When are gambling winnings taxable?
Only when gambling amounts to a business — a professional gambler who gambles systematically for a living can be taxed on their winnings. This is rare and fact-specific; the vast majority of players owe nothing.
Is crypto gambling taxed differently?
The winnings themselves aren't taxed, but Inland Revenue treats cryptocurrency as property. If you later sell or convert crypto you won and make a gain, that disposal can be taxable. Keep records of the NZD value when you receive and when you dispose of crypto.
Do I need to declare gambling winnings to IRD?
Recreational winnings don't need to be declared as income. If you dispose of won cryptocurrency at a gain, that may need to be accounted for. If in doubt, or for large sums, talk to an accountant.

Play it safe

Gambling should be entertainment, not a way to make money. Set a deposit limit before you start, never chase losses, and only bet what you can afford to lose. All reputable operators let you set deposit, loss and session limits, take a time-out, or self-exclude.
